Swimming Pool Alarms and SafetyLayers of ProtectionWhen you talk about pool alarms you are talking about layers of protection for your pool. No one alarm is a stand-alone solution for pool safety and no alarm replaces adult supervision of your pool/spa/patio area. There are many types of pool alarms most of which can be used in conjunction with other Alarm and Barrier methods of protection for your pool area. We recommend that you use more than one product to protect your family, friends and guests from pool and spa related injuries up to and including accidental drowning. Different locations have different alarm regulations - customers should consult their local code enforcement if they have questions about code compliant pool alarms for their area. Types of Alarms 1. Submersible alarms - These are the most popular type of pool alarm. These types of alarms are generally installed on the edge of the pool - they are available for both aboveground and inground pools. They extend down into the pool water and will sound an alarm pool side if waves/ripples/movement in the water indicates that the water has been disturbed by entry of an object of over a certain weight - usually between 25-45 lbs but each alarm has their own rating. There are many versions of this alarm with variations as listed below. You can view the selections here: Pool Alarms
3. Door/Gate/Window Alarms - These alarms consist of a small battery pack and 2 or more sensors that are mounted with one sensor on each side of the opening so they are touching eachother. When the sensors are pulled apart by the door/gate/window opening, the alarm will sound. Most of these alarms come with at least one "bypass" button - some have two where one can be mounted on the outside for re-entry - which, when pushed, will deactivate the alarm for long enough for a person to enter/exit the door without the alarm sounding. This should be mounted high enough that it is not accessible by children. The most popular is the Techko S187D Pool Door Gate or Window Alarm. 4. Wrist Band Alarms - These alarms require a base and wristbands. The most popular is the Terrapin Safety Turtle Pool Alarm System. The base unit is located in the home and the wristbands are placed on the children or individual that you want to be protected by the alarm. They are also available in pet collars to protect pets. When the sensor on the collar is submersed in water the alarm base will sound the alert. The drawbacks of this system are that the wristband must be worn at ALL times to be effective protection. These are wonderful though for certain situations - such as family BBQs where you may be IN the pool area and adults swimming etc but there are many non-swimming children around who could accidentally fall into the pool unnoticed otherwise. POOL SAFETY- Multiple alarms may be used for added layers of protection. You may have a perimeter alarm to alert you when someone enters the pool area, a submersible alarm to alert you if someone falls into the pool itself, door/gate/window alarms to alert you if someone exits the rear of your home or opens a gate that leads to the pool area as well as wrist band alarms and all or any combination of the above can be used in conjunction with other safety measures. The BEST protection for a pool is preventing an unsafe entry to begin with - we highly recommend also investing in a sturdy pool fence to protect your pool area from ever being entered. Inground Pool Fencing and Aboveground Pool Fencing are both available. Pool Safety Covers can be used when the pool is not in use to prevent accidental drownings - safety covers are sturdy enough to support the weight of an adult walking across them. We recommend using as many of these safety precautions as possible to reduce the possibility of an injury or death. There is still NO substitution for adequate supervision of children in a home with a pool. ENTRAPMENT! Entrapment is another major concern for pool safety - even proficient swimmers can drown when they are trapped at the side or bottom of the pool by suction. Please consider a pool pump with SVRS (Safety Vacuum Release System) or upgrading your existing pump motor to an SVRS Pool Pump Motor - this is a system that detects entrapment conditions and will automatically shut off the pool pump to eliminate the suction entrapment when it is detected. This technology saves lives. Click here for more information on SVRS or here for a FAQ Regarding the Federal Pool and Spa Safety Act. |
