Swimming Pool and Spa Chemicals

Pool and Spa Clarifiers, Conditioners, and Balancers

Chlorine is a disinfecting chemical commonly used in swimming pools and spas.  This chemical can be purchased in the form of tablets or granules for use in your swimming pool or spa. Chlorine keeps a pool sterile by disinfecting it.

Bromine attaches itself to harmful bacteria in a different way than chlorine and it also reacts differently to shock. In a chlorinated pool the chlorine attaches itself to impurities and becomes neutralized. When shocked with chlorinated shock, the chlorine with impurities will burn off, be filtered out, and leave your pool unprotected. When bromine combines with impurities it doesn't neutralize. The bromine particles attached to impurities and can still sanitize you pool. When your pool is shocked, only the contaminated bromine burns off, still leaving unused bromine behind.

Algaecides work by both destroying and preventing algae growth and can be purchased in tablets or liquid form. Some algaecides are chemical mixtures, although there are also non-toxic versions on the market as well.

Shock Treatments are normally needed after your pool has been inactive over the winter and are often recommended throughout the swimming season and for algae as well. Shocks are a high-dosage mixture of different chemicals.

Clarifiers, Conditioners, and Balancers consist of many products including pH increasers or reducers and calcium hardness increasers that help to balance different parts of a pool. Stabilizers or conditioners are used on chlorine based pool sanitization systems to enhance the effectiveness of chlorine.
