Spa Unions make work easier and allow for quick disconnect of spa components. They consist of a male threaded part and a female threaded collar that mate with an o-ring in the middle to seal it together. Hand tighten and applying anything but limited pressure with channel locks may get you into a whole lot of plumbing problems fast. If your joint is leaking try lubricating or replacing the o-ring. Sealers like silicone should not be used. The threads do not need to be taped. Pressure applied to the o-ring is what seals the two parts together.
